I'll leave it up to you guys to consider your own opinions on the 2003 Eddie Murphy comic Haunted Mansion movie but this news, announced yesterday at the San Diego Comic Con, is simply made of awesome. Guillermo Del Toro, the acclaimed, visionary director behind fantasy masterpieces like Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy films, announced that he will be bringing the beloved Haunted Mansion ride to the big screen in 2012.
"It's going to be a thrill ride for the whole family," he said at yesterday's Tron panel. And rightfully so -- Del Toro reminded the audience that Walt Disney made more than just cute and fuzzy images -- Disney films feature some of the scariest villains and creepiest scenes of all time. "We need to honor that side of the legacy." And the crowd went wild.
The new film -- which Del Toro will write and produce, no word on directing yet -- will have no connection to the 2003 comedy. Disney execs are behind Del Toro's vision all the way. "We want a scary movie that's as scary as the ride. If you're 11 years old, you can go on the ride but it's still scary," Disney production head Sean Bailey was quoted as saying. "Tonally we're going to make a movie that is for families but is a fun and, at times, scary movie."
Haunted Mansion fans should also feel confident with this piece of information -- Del Toro himself is a HUGE fan of the ride. He even has a room in his house dedicated to the iconic attraction, including secret bookcases, wallpaper from the original ride, and original art from Imagineer and ride co-designer Marc Davis. He plans to include specific Haunted Mansion details in the film, though he's being very secretive about plot. All that is known so far is that the 999 "happy haunts, "with room for one more," will definitely be a factor, along with a spectre known as the Hatbox Ghost, who Del Toro calls a "pivotal figure."
What's your opinion, Disney Fans? Is this great news or are you worried? What would the Hitchhiking Ghosts make of this? Let me know in the comments!
