Get ready for a sweet weekend Celebration

April 26, 2013 0
Get your sweet tooth ready. It's time for the 12th annual Great American Pie Festival!

More than 30,000 pie lovers are expected to attend this weekend's event, which is held in Lakeside Park in Celebration, Florida. Tickets are a mere $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children between the ages of six and 12 (plus another $10 for kids who want to enjoy bouncy castles, arts and crafts, and more in the Children's Area). And for that low price, you get to enjoy the Never-Ending Pie Buffet, featuring "award-winning pie, ice cream, toppings, cheeses and beverages."

This year's sponsors include Bakers Square Restaurants and Pies, Bonert's Slice of Pie, Legendary Baking, Kroger's Private Selection, Publix Super Markets, Inc., Village Inn, Winn-Dixie, Wick's Pies and Cabot Cheese. Dunkin Donuts, Smuckers, and Publix will also be on hand to supply coffee, toppings, and ice cream (among other delicious treats). There will be pies for sale, pies for sampling, pie decorating, baking demonstrations by chefs from all over the country, and of course a pie eating contest.

The festival is held Saturday and Sunday, with tickets available at the event itself -- here are the details:

Saturday, April 27, 2013; 11am-7pm
Sunday, April 28, 2013; 12pm-5pm

Boardwalk Bakery reopens tomorrow, and it's bringing BACON!

April 25, 2013 0

Friday, April 26, 2013 brings the return of the Boardwalk Bakery to the Walt Disney World Boardwalk area. Opening time is bright and early at 6:30 am, and this is truly a sweet way to start any Disney day.

The new location is twice the size of the original, with dark wood and bright mosaics throughout. The combination adds both classic charm and colorful touches that make it right at home on a Disney boardwalk.

The menu has been expanded as well, and includes hot breakfast items, salads, and lunch specials. But in a bakery, it's the sweet stuff that matters. Here's a list of just some of what you can expect:

  •  chocolate croissants
  •  cupcakes
  •  cinnamon rolls
  •  eclairs
  •  cannoli
  •  salted caramel ganache
  •  peanut butter, banana, and candied bacon pie

And that last one? You don't even have to wait, if you're willing to put in the time in your own kitchen. The recipe is available at the official Disney Parks Blog now

EPCOT's Bakery Bargain

January 23, 2013 0

I love a Disney bargain, and the re-opening of EPCOT France's Les Halles Boulangerie & Pâtisserie is my new favorite one. It's the PERFECT place for a light lunch, delicious snacks, or indulgent desserts, or -- the best option, in my opinion, all three.

Some of the menu items here are the very same ones that you can get in the far more expensive and time-consuming restaurants in France, making the bakery a delightful time-saver as well. The menu features sweets and savories, so there should be plenty here for everyone you're traveling with, except possibly strict calorie-counters. My favorites are the cheese plate (three cheese plus a mini baguette), the Croque Monsieur (only the best grilled cheese sandwich in the history of sliced bread), the Sacristain (pastry filled with cream and chocolate chips), and the perfect Cream Puff.

Plus now there is much more room inside in case you want to savor snacks while taking a load off your tired feet. I love it here. I wonder if they'd let me set up a cot...
