Disney Treats Adults with a new lounge opening at Hollywood Studios

October 30, 2013 0
We love Disney for all it does for the kids, including the kid in all of us. But every once in a while, it's great to see that they remember their over-21 fans too. The new lounge opening today at Hollywood Studios is a terrific reminder of that.

The new menu will feature plenty of adult treats, including classic cocktails like Mint Gimlets (Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin, simply syrup, lime juice and fresh mint) and Bloody Marys. There will also be flights of martinis, Champagne, wines, Scotch and, cordials, plus a list of wines by the glass or half bottle -- perfect for sharing.

Speaking of sharing, small plates will feature heavily on the menu, so you can sip and nosh with artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, duck confit tacos, steamed Prince Edward Island mussels, and Derby Sliders featuring either a Wagyu beefwith cognac mustard aïoli, smoked gouda cheese, bacon and avocado, or house-made chorizo slider with chipotle mayo, manchego cheese, pickles, and crispy onions.

This is a welcome addition to The Brown Derby, and I can't wait to get nibbling. Outside seating is also available, making this the perfect way to enjoy Disney in the fall.

Big Breaking Disney News: Avatar is coming to Walt Disney World!

September 20, 2011 0

It was just announced via the official Disney Parks blog -- the world of Avatar is coming to Disney.

Disney's Animal Kingdom will be home to the world's first Avatar-themed land in the world. Details are few and far between right now, but here's what we know:

  • The world will be created thanks to a partnership between Disney Imagineering and James Cameron's own Lightstorm Entertainment.

  • Cameron and his production partner Jon Landau will be directly involved with creative decisions; both will work "side-by-side with Disney Imagineers" on the project.

  • Design phase has just being, with construction slated to being in 2013.

A special Disney Parks blog post will appear later today; blog author Tom Stagg will be doing a special Q&A specifically about the project. Check back later for more details!

BREAKING NEWS! Disney's Fantasmic! Every Night!

June 24, 2011 0

The WILDLY popular nightime show at Disney's Hollywood Studios will finally be available nightly viewing, according to the official Disney Parks Blog. This show is considered by many to be the finest after-dark event in any theme park, anywhere, and getting a seat for the performance isn't always easy -- people have been known to stake their claims hours early at peak capacity times of year.

This summer, from July 3 to September 30, Fantasmic! will play every night of the week. Will it be enough? Hard to say -- frankly I hope it goes well enough that they decide to make this change a permanent one. If you opt to check it out this summer -- and you should -- grab a schedule as soon as you arrive at the park and plan for your experience.

BREAKING NEW: New Universal Orlando atttraction announcements!

May 19, 2011 0

Universal Orlando has announced the latest attraction news to grace the theme park grounds. Speculation has been going on for a while now, especially with the park's official twitter account teasing little hints and images. But the offical news happened just this morning, at 10:30am via Mark Woodbury, the President of Universal Creative.

The first big news is about the Spiderman ride, one of the park's most popular attractions. "Major, high-tech enhancements" are being added to the already technologically-advanced attraction. According to Theirry Coup, Senior Vice President of Universal Creative Studio, the ride will now feature "a new level of detail, claryity, and color in 4K HD -- making it more realistic than ever."

And then there was the bigger news. A brand-new attraction, based on a film that grossed hundreds of millions world wide and "captivated the world with its unique humor, memorable characters, and compelling storyline." What film? Despicable Me.

That's right! The all-new attraction will be a 3D adventure utilizing the same new technology that The Amazing Advetures of Spiderman will feature. Guests will "join Gru, Agnes, Edith, Margo, and the mischievous minions on an outrageously fun adventure." Guests will even be "transformed" into minions!

"First you'll be taken into Gru's house," said Coup. "And then you'll get to see his lab, and then it will get deeper and deeper into some of the ares in that world that are just fantastic."

No word yet on whether the film's voice stars -- including Steve Carrell, Miranda Cosgrove, and Russell Brand -- will be taking part in the ride's development. But given Universal Orlando's past history of getting serious star power behind its attractions -- notably the cast of the Harry Potter films -- it's a good bet they will be trying to get the original actors on board with the project. Ony time will tell if they are successful.

American Express cardholder? Your membership counts at Universal Orlando

May 10, 2011 1
Buying your Universal Orlando multi-park or annual pass with your American Express card? Then you get access to a special members-only lounge located in the Studios, across from the Shrek store:

The lounge will be open seven days a week from noon to 5pm. It features air conditioning (of course), concierge service, complimentary beverages and light snacks, plus comfy chairs and a great spot to take a break in the middle of the hottest sumemr hours. Only tickets purchased with an American Express card at the front gates of the park or via the official site are eligible for access. This is expected to be the first of many new special offers from American Express, "the official payment of choice at Universal Orlando."

The current lounge offer is available until May 15, 2012. No word on what will happen to the lounge after that date, but my guess is if it sells well and proves popular, it may be occupying that space for a long time.

Incredible "forced perspective" images of the new Beast's Castle in WDW's Fantasyland expansion

April 14, 2011 0
The first offical images were published on the Disney Parks blog just a few days ago. When people saw the pics, there was a little panic -- would Beast's castle overpower the iconic Cinderella Castle at the foot of Main Street USA? Would it dwarf Fantasyland classic rides like Dumbo? Uh, no. Not quite. Check it out:

This isn't the first time Disney Parks have used the magic of forced perspective in their Imagineering. Walt was a proponent of it back in the construction days of Disneyland, using it not just for buildings but also for trees and shrubs that accompanied the structures. It's all intended to create the most dramatic backdrops for the Happiest Places on Earth, and the Fantasyland expansion is certainly not going be exempt from that rule. Construction is ongoing, with planned openings (section by section, most likely) beginning late 2012 .

March Madness -- get your calendars ready for theme park festivals

February 25, 2011 0
There's never a shortage of things to do in Orlando, that's for sure. Spring 2011 holds three different fetivals at the Big Three. Check your calendars and mark some dates to attend all three. All festivals are included with your regular park admission, so it's all bonus with no additional purchase!

EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival
March 2 - May 15, 2011
This annual Walt Disney World event brings in expert and amateur horticulturalists from near and far, along with anyone who appreciates beautiful colors and plants. The festival also offers free seminars, nightly entertainment from some big names of 60s and 70s music, and activities for green thumbs of all ages. Bring a camera. Visit more than once, if you can, to see how different gardens and topiaries change throughout the festival run.

SeaWorld Orlando Presents Viva La Musica
March 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 2011
Saturdays are muy caliente at SeaWorld Orlando this spring. The park welcomes back this annual celebration of Hispanic music, food and culture (also Sundays at Busch Gardens Tampa). Musical guests this year are Chino & Nacho, Manny Manuel, Jerry Rivera, and Ednita Nazario. Executive chef Hector Colon has also announced an expanded menu for this year's festival, so foodies should definitely hit this event.

Universal Studios Mardi Gras 2011
February 12 - April 23, 2011 (every Saturday and select weeknights)
March holds a host of great concerts at this annual celebration, which grows more popular and more elaborate every year. Bring your best bead-catching skills and marvel at the parade, which is a true spectacle that glitters and gleams in the Florida sunshine. March's musical lineup features Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, Neon Trees, The Roots, OneRepublic, and Blake Shelton. Wonderful street performers and special festival food are two more highlights that make this a worthwhile addition to your Universal Orlando day.

Legoland News: you can buy your 2011 passes now!

November 03, 2010 0

The newest addition to the Orlando themepark landscape may not be opening until October 2011, but don't let that stop you from buying tickets. Both day and annual passes for Legoland Florida are now on sale.

Ticket prices are competitive, even reasonable. One day tickets are $65 for adults and $55 for children from 3 to12 years of age and adults over the age of 60. Annual passes are available in two price points -- $99 for a standard annual pass (unlimited park admission) and $129 for annual plus (unlimited park admission, parking, and food and merchandise discounts). Both annual passes also include members-only events and specials, and a subscription to the park newsletter.

Legoland Florida is a planned 150-acre family theme park located outside of Orlando proper -- 45 minutes outside, in fact, in Winter Haven, Florida. The park will have rides, interactive attractions, shows, and plenty of food and shopping. It is primarily focused on families with children 12 or younger, though nostalgic teens might find a lot to love.
